Calm

As part of my piano studies, I was recently introduced to Debussy’s Footprints in the Snow – perhaps one of the slowest pieced I have played in a long time. Slow pieces can actually be more difficult to play than fast pieces because the listener can hear every mistake clearly. As a result, every note must be played perfectly and with proper expression and phrasing. I had never composed a slow piano piece before so I thought I’d give it a try which is how the song Calm was born.

Jednym z utworow, ktore teraz cwicze na pianinie sa Footprints in the Snow (Slady na Sniegu) Debussy’ego – prawdopodobnie jeden z najwolniejszych utworow, jaki kiedykolwiek gralem. Wolne utwory, sa tak naprawde trudniejsze do grania niz szybsze, bo sluchacz moze latwo zauwazyc blad. Dlatego tez, kazda nuta musi byc grana idealnie, z odpowiednia ekspresja i fraza. Do tej pory nigdy nie napisalem wolnego utworu na pianino i pomyslalem, ze moze sprobuje tym razem. I tak powstal utwor Calm (Spokoj).

Calm is a slow, singing piece in C major. The form is A-B-A, also known as ternary form. The A part is very calm and faint. The B part is still calm, but has more of a melody than the A part.

As a listener, do you generally prefer faster or slower piano melodies? And if you are a composer, do you prefer writing faster or slower piano melodies? Please respond in the comments section below.
